TEACHING IN ASIA
The job market in Asia is the largest in the world. Most of the countries in this region are industrialised and represent one of the fastest-growing economic regions in the world. Additionally, there is a large and growing middle class leading to a high demand for quality education. Thousands of jobs are available in language centres where you will be expected to teach both young learners and adults, as many children study English after their school day is over. The hiring season for language centers is all year round. There is also a high demand for native English speakers in schools where the hiring season is December/January to begin in March, and again in June/July to begin in September. Schools tend to hire teachers in advance from their home countries, conducting interviews by phone.
TEFL teachers in many countries in Asia can enjoy a high standard of living and the potential to save between 30-50% of your salary. In north Asia (eg, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan) salaries are amongst the highest paid in the TEFL world, with the potential for earning as much as £2,000 a month. In China, you would earn much less, but the cost of living is lower and many employers offer free accommodation, round-trip airfares, food and more. Additionally, both schools and language centers all over Asia may offer incentives such as airfare, housing allowances, health insurance, paid holidays and completion bonuses. Schools will also offer help with finding suitable accommodation and acclimatising to the local culture.
